In an ASX filing on Monday, Crown Resorts revealed it has been granted permission to “commence the operation of a limited number of electronic gaming machines and electronic table games,” at Crown Melbourne, most likely from this Thursday 12 November.

However, those limitations mean only VIP patrons will be allowed in for the time being at one of 10 designated areas, with a maximum of 10 patrons in each area, and smoking will not be permitted. There will also be a requirement for every second gaming machine to be disabled while no single patron will be allowed on the gaming floor for more than 90 minutes per day.

The main gaming floor at Crown Melbourne, which shut its doors on 23 March as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the country, will remain off limits while there is no word on when poker will be allowed to return, and with what restrictions.

It also seems almost certain that the 2021 Aussie Millions – originally due to kick off in mid-January – will be postponed until later in the year. The 2020 Aussie Millions was one of the last major tournament series in the country to be completed before COVID, with the Crown Poker Championship, Melbourne Poker Championship and Victorian Poker Championship all subsequently cancelled.

Star Entertainment Group has also cancelled all poker for 2020 including WSOP Circuit Sydney, previously planned for late November.

Crown Resorts CEO Ken Barton said Monday, “We have been working for some time with the Victorian Government and health authorities to determine how we can safely re-open Crown Melbourne and have developed extensive physical distancing and hygiene measures to allow re-opening in a safe manner.”

“We are pleased to be able to commence the process of welcoming back our employees and customers to Crown Melbourne.”

The company said it had reopened its Crown Towers hotel from Monday, while some retail and F&B outlets opened from last week.

How to play Pai Gow at Crown Casinos

At first glance Pai Gow looks confusing, all those red and white dots, strange names and so on. The good news is that the actual colour of the dots is meaningless and most of those strange names have English equivalents. An exciting variation of the regular more traditional game of Pai Gow- Bonanza Pai Gow is also available to play. Bonanza Pai Gow incorporates two additional betting options: the Bonus bet and the Tie bet.

Pai gow is played with a set of 32 dominoes . Each player and dealer will be given four tiles. The player will separate his tiles into low and high hands. The player does not need to specify which is higher, as this will be obvious. Each pair of tiles will have a ranking order.

The player’s high hand will be compared to the dealer’s high hand, and the player’s low hand compared to the dealer’s low hand.

If both player and dealer have a Wong, Gong, or 1 to 9 points, the tie will be broken according to which hand has the higher-ranked high tile. If the high tile does not break the tie then the win will go to the banker. A 0-0 tie always goes to the banker.

When using high tiles to break a tie, the rank order is the same as the pair order (see picture above), except the two tiles in the highest “gee joon” pair are ranked lowest individually and will therefore never be a hand’s high tile.

If the player wins both hands he will win even money, less a 5% commission. If the player wins one and loses one then his wager will push. If the dealer wins both then the player will lose his wager.

The banker plays against every other player at the table and the dealer. The dealer will wager the same amount the player wagered the last time the dealer was the banker. More often than not, other players will sit out the hand when another player is banking, letting him or her take on the dealer alone.

Crown Casino Melbourne also offers Bonanza Side Bet in Pai Gow. Here is the possible outcome of the Bonanza side bet, what each pays, the probability, and contribution to the return. The lower right cell shows a house edge of 9.61%.
